Progress in conceptual design of a pool-type sodium-cooled fast reactor in Japan

Kato, Atsushi; Kubo, Shigenobu; Chikazawa, Yoshitaka; Miyagawa, Takayuki*; Uchita, Masato*; Suzuno, Tetsuji*; Endo, Junji*; Kubo, Koji*; Murakami, Hisatomo*; Uzawa, Masayuki*; et al.

Proceedings of International Conference on Fast Reactors and Related Fuel Cycles; Sustainable Clean Energy for the Future (FR22) (Internet), 11 Pages, 2022/04

The authors are carrying out conceptual design studies for a pool-type sodium-cooled fast reactor. There are main challenges such as measures against severe earthquake in Japan, thermal hydraulic in a reactor vessel (RV), a decay heat removal system design. When the JP-pool SFR of 650 MWe is installed in Japan, it shall be designed against the severe seismic conditions. Additionally, a newly three-dimensional seismic isolation system is under development.

Ito, Takashi; Asano, Hiroyuki*; Morishita, Takatoshi; Kato, Takao*; Takasaki, Eiichi*; Tanaka, Hirokazu*; Yoshino, Kazuo*; Naito, Fujio*

Proceedings of 2nd Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan and 30th Linear Accelerator Meeting in Japan, p.242 - 244, 2005/07

The third Drift Tube Linac (DTL3) is adopted for 37MeV-50MeV part of high intensity proton linac for Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex(J-PARC). DTL3 consists of 26 full drift tubes, 2 half drift tubes and 26 post-couplers. As a result of tuning of the accelerating field of the DTL3, the resonant frequency was adjusted to 324MHz and the average accelerating field distribution was adjusted within 1%.

An Alignment system of J-PARC linac

Morishita, Takatoshi; Ao, Hiroyuki; Ito, Takashi; Ueno, Akira; Hasegawa, Kazuo; Ikegami, Masanori*; Kubota, Chikashi*; Takasaki, Eiichi*; Tanaka, Hirokazu*; Naito, Fujio*; et al.

Proceedings of 1st Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan and 29th Linear Accelerator Meeting in Japan, p.671 - 673, 2004/08

A precise alignment of accelerator components is essential for the J-PARC linear accelerator. The wire position sensor is applied to measure the accelerator component positioning and the ground motion of the building is measured by the hydrostatic leveling sensors. In this paper, the scheme of the alignment system is presented.

Proceedings of 1st Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan and 29th Linear Accelerator Meeting in Japan, p.156 - 158, 2004/08

A commissioning of the J-PARC linac DTL1 is now under way at KEK. A 30mA H$$^{-}$$ beam was accelerated to 19.7-MeV, and 100% transmission was obtained with a 20-msec-pulse-width and 12.5-Hz-repetition beam. In this paper, present status of the DTL1 commissioning and preliminary results of the commissioning, such as emittance measurements, are presented.

J-PARC construction and its linac commissioning

Yamazaki, Yoshishige

Proceedings of 9th European Particle Accelerator Conference (EPAC 2004), p.1351 - 1353, 2004/00

The J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) is under construction in JAERI Tokai site. The beam commissioning will start there by the end of 2006. Prior to this, the front end of the linac was beam-commissioned in 2003 at KEK. The negative hydrogen beam with a peak current of 30 mA was accelerated up to 20 MeV by the first tank of the three DTL's following the 3-MeV RFQ linac. The 324-MHz DTL contains the electro quadrupole magnets with water-cooling channels specially fabricated by means of electroforming and wire-cutting technologies. The construction status of the J-PARC accelerator is also presented.

Status of linac design for fusion neutron irradiation facility - IFMIF

Sugimoto, Masayoshi

Proceedings of 25th Linear Accelerator Meeting in Japan, p.141 - 143, 2000/07

The International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) as the neutron irradiation facility for developing the fusion reactor materials requires a linac accelerating 40 MeV deuteron beam with current of ampere class continuously, and the design of the accelerating module of 125 mA is conducted. For completing the conceptual design study, the design to reduce the cost by employing a staged construction with 3 steps to achieve final goal of 250 mA was performed. As for the linac, the strategy to realize the 50 mA acceleration at first step and to upgrade to 125 mA was conceived. In this year, the existing designs of RFQ, DTL and RF system will be reviewed and major testing items must be defined, to initiate the verification tests for key component technology. This report summarizes the status of each of component design and the related issues to be implemented in the verification tests.

The quantification of the rate-of-rise of the thermal stratification interface, a "thin" vertical zone where the temperature gradient is the steepest, is important in assessing the potential implications of thermally-induced stress problems in liquid-metal cooled reactors. Thermal stratification can likewise occur in confined volumes containing ordinary fluids (Pr$$geq$$1), where there is an input of thermal convective energy. In the prominent case of liquid metal reactors, there have been many studies on quantifying the rate-of-rise of a defined stratification interface, in terms of one or more of the following dimensionless groups, mainly: Richardson (Ri), Reynolds (Re), Grashof (Gr), Rayleigh (Ra) and/or Froude (Fr) numbers. Stratification is also a transient process in the volume in question. In the present work the anthors presents a derivation based on order-of-magnitude analysis (OMA), including an sensible energy balance, that produces a new representation more consistent than p
